Kudos to the New Speaker of the House!

So glad the Repubs finally settled on their choice for Speaker of the House!

"As for the rest, all of 'em crooks:
Rooking their guests and cooking the books
Seldom do you see
Honest men like me
A gent of good intent
Who's content to be

Master of the house, doling out the charm
Ready with a handshake and an open palm."

The Democratic Presidential Debates

The sixth Democratic Presidential Debate of 2019  at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles last night had a pared down field of candidates and we at The Vidalia Onion were glad to see Joe and Bernie holding their own on center stage.

“Hah! Those young folks didn’t stand a chance with us on stage!

“You got that right! After all, our combined experience is older than most democracies!”

“Ya think we came across as too grumpy?”

“Not a chance! There was one problem, though.”

“What was that?”

“It was on PBS – no commercials! That severely cut into our bathroom breaks.

“Oh yes. That ‘fierce urgency of now’ takes on a whole new meaning for men of a certain age.”

“But we made it! See ya at the next debate.”

“Not if I see you first!”

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin Reminisce

[In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, I am re-visiting this popular post from 2015]

NASA photo from Buzz Aldrin's Facebook page
“As I made my way down the ladder, I partially closed the hatch, being
careful not to lock it on the way out (there wasn’t a handle on the door).”

This week marks the anniversary of the first manned lunar landing on July 20, 1969. It was Apollo 11, and Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon, “One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” There were a couple of items about that mission that I learned this week. Buzz Aldrin (the second man on the moon) posted on his Facebook page, “As I made my way down the ladder, I partially closed the hatch, being careful not to lock it on the way out (there wasn’t a handle on the door).”

The second item of interest was a Reuters headline from 2009 that a friend sent: “Moon landing tapes got erased, NASA admits.” With these two bits of information, I came up with an imaginary conversation between Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Since Neil Armstrong died in 2012, it is possible that this conversation, or one like it, could have taken place.

Neil Armstrong's telephone rings. It’s his Apollo 11 colleague, Buzz Aldrin on the line:

Neil:  Hello?
Buzz: Neil, it’s me, Buzz.
Neil:  Oh, hi, Buzz. What’s up?”
Buzz: Hey, did ya hear about what happened at NASA?
Neil:  No, what?
Buzz: You know that scratchy staticky recording of your first words on the moon? Well
           NASA accidentally erased it!

Neil:  Erased it? What the ––! So I said it was one small step – I didn’t mean it was
insignificant. But that’s what it’s like in government work, isn't it?

Buzz: Yeah, apparently they taped over it by mistake.

Neil:  Taped over it! What did they tape, for cryin’ out loud?
Buzz: Who knows? Hubble pictures from deep space, maybe – or Martian shots
from Rover? Hell, they could have even used it to tape Oprah’s final
broadcast for all we know. You remember Finnegan? He used to use all that
fancy NASA equipment to record Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In on
          Monday nights!
Neil:  Get out!
Buzz: If I’m lyin’ I’m dyin’. You know Finnegan had that photo of Goldie Hawn in
a bikini at his work station.
Neil:  And all in the name of science! Go figure!

Buzz: Well, I don’t know how it happened, but they erased it, alright. I guess you
and I are just old news, buddy.
Neil:  That sounds like NASA.

Buzz: Yeah, you remember when we were doing all those trial runs before the big
launch? And that first time they told us to make sure we didn’t lock the
           hatch on the way out?

Neil:  Yeah, can you believe it? “There’s no handle on the door,” they said.

Buzz: That’s it! I had this fear that I’d follow you down the ladder and hear a
crazy “click” when I shut the hatch. Uh-oh! That would have been some fix.

Neil:  Yeah – then I’d be thinking, “one small step – and one big dufus for a moon
           partner!”

Buzz: Can you imagine what Collin’s would be saying up in the command
module? He’d be like, “Houston, we’ve got a problem – and his initials are
           Buzz Aldrin!”

Neil:  I’m just glad we remembered all the steps and made it back home.

Buzz: You know, Neil, I think I’ve still got a tape of that lunar landing down in the
basement. It’s over there with the vinyl LPs that I can’t play anymore. You
           want me to send it?

Neil:  No, Buzz, you don’t have to send it. I saw it last week on YouTube. I can see
it any time I want, as long as nobody takes it down.

Buzz: Well, I gotta go Neil. I’ve got a lecture date. There’s a third grade class over
at Park Elementary waiting to hear about the Apollo missions.

Neil:  Well just tell ‘em the good stuff, Buzz. Leave the tape glitches and Goldie
           Hawn out of it!

Happy Thanksgiving

For all who are making those Thanksgiving plans...May you find enough Episcopalians to bring sufficient decorum to the holiday table (or at least a détente until the last slice of pumpkin pie is served).

I have posted some Boris and Natasha bits on this site since the last presidential election (here and here). Here is something David Corn retweeted:

And here's another photo of them, Russians Mariia Butina and Alexander Torshin at the 2017 National Prayer Breakfast. President Trump spoke from the podium in the background. (Photo via Facebook)

Porky Pig's Blue Christmas

This comedic rendition of “Blue Christmas” first aired on the syndicated John Boy and Billy radio show in 1994 and became an instant classic. Their radio program was based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Their comedic morning program, “The John Boy & Billy Big Show” was broadcast from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time in several Southern and Midwestern states via syndication through Premiere Networks, primarily airing on classic rock, active rock, and country stations.

Denny Brownlee, from Charlotte , N.C. recorded the song in 1985 and later changed the credits from "Porky Pig" to "Seymour Swine & The Squealers." I think I first heard it played on “Magic 96” in Birmingham, AL around 1996. I was on my was to work, laughing all the way.

The Alabama Sleaze Trifectorate

Oh how I wish this were satire, but sadly, it is what we are facing. Alabamians go to the polls today to decide if they will keep corruption viable in their state. These three outlaws held the highest state offices in each branch of government: Gov. Robert Bentley, House Speaker Mike Hubbard and Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore. They were all removed from office on legal and moral grounds.

We now have the unthinkable option of keeping one of these corrupt cronies (Roy Moore) in public office when we vote for a new senator in a special election.

Let's keep them all out and start with a clean slate (emphasis on CLEAN) when we go to the polls to vote for our next senator.

Memo to John Cleese

My Dear Mr. Cleese,

In light of the recent referendum in which the UK voted to withdraw from the EU, are we to assume that we Americans will no longer be seeing that snide “Letter to America” from you stating that our independence is being revoked due to our election outcome and that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be resuming monarchical duties over the states? After all, the English have now demonstrated a capacity for being ill-informed at the polls and thereby voting against their own best interests.

Yes, ill-informed reactionary voting – it’s a thing now. It seems to be associated with the popular vote and I suppose we must live with it on both sides of the Atlantic. You may prefer to call it the Americanization of England. Call it what you will, but please think twice before sending any more letters to America, and do enjoy your tea.

                                                                                                                                                                                               Yours Sincerely,

                                                                            George Clooney

[Note: I realize that that John Cleese's "Letter to America" was not actually written by John Cleese, but it was all in good fun, as is this "memo." ~ CK]

Mike Hubbard’s Advice to the Governor: Get a Tattoo!

Mike Hubbard (photo from Legal Schnauzer)

Mike Hubbard represented one on of the three branches of state government in his role as Speaker of the House in the Alabama State Legislature. He now represents one third of the Alabama state leadership currently at odds with the law, since leaders of all three branches have been under investigation. The governor may even face impeachment while Chief Justice Judge Roy Moore faces ethics complaints.

Hubbard is the first of the three to be convicted (on 12 of 23 ethics charges). His advice to his Republican colleagues still facing charges is, “Get a tattoo before you go to the slammer.”

Gov. Bentley
(Wikipedia photo)
“Ordinarily,” Hubbard told Governor Bentley in a recent telephone conversation, “I would recommend you get the best legal counsel. But you know, I had the best legal counsel available in the state of Alabama and now I’ve landed in prison. And let me tell you, Governor, prison is a rude awakening.”

“I faced lots of criticism as a state legislator – people telling me I was no real statesman and stuff like that, but now that I’m in the slammer, I can’t get any respect here either. These thugs are telling me I am no real criminal. They say I’m just two-bit politician. It is especially disheartening to see the disdain my fellow inmates have for me. I really think that if I had a tattoo when they hauled me into the slammer, I would have a better chance of being one of the guys and getting a little more respect for my misdeeds.”

Judge Roy Moore
(AL.Com photo)
It is not known whether Governor Bentley has made any contact with a tattoo parlor in an effort to ease his own transition. It is assumed that Judge Roy Moore will heed the injunction against tattoos in Leviticus 19:28, since he has a penchant for Old Testament laws. A source close to the judge did say that he may follow the Apostle Paul’s example of writing prison letters to churches. “Not that he wants to add to scripture, but there is a lot of fundraising opportunity there.”

Birmingham City Hall: Old Fashioned Fisticuffs

They really have the city's best interest at heart

It didn't take long for local politics to take to the national stage when CNN carried the story, "A bloody backroom brawl between the mayor and a council member -- who has now been charged with third degree assault -- at a city council meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, on Tuesday landed both of them in the hospital." (read the story here). Apparently the two gentlemen got into a verbal altercation before deciding to "take it outside" metaphorically speaking. They actually took their discussion to a back room when the discussion led to physical altercation, putting both in the hospital. As with any embarrassing situation, sometimes humor is the best recourse. It certainly did not take long for someone to come up with a parody of the debacle at City Hall:

The Brawl at City Hall (A Parody Video)
It was a you-can't-make-this-up throw down of a day in Birmingham City Hall.
